Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has charged the nation’s security agencies to up the ante in securing the country for the 2023 general election and other off cycle elections slated for June and July 2022.
With just nine months to the general elections and the frightening security environment all over the place, the INEC Chairman said the security agencies can still do something to secure the country for the polls, pointing out that the general security situation across the country is a source of concern.
Addressing the security Agencies under the aegis of the Inter-Agency Consultative Meeting on Election Security (ICCES) at its 2nd quarterly Consultative meeting with INEC, Prof Yakubu underscored the need for the Agencies to expedite action on fighting insecurity as the commission will not alter the time timetable of the 2023 Election.
“The general security situation in the country and its impact on the electoral process is a source of concern to the Commission. However, we are confident that with nine months to the 2023 General Election, there is enough time to respond to the security challenges and secure the nation for elections to take place nationwide. The Timetable for the election has also been released.
“Let us not wait until a few weeks to the election before we realise that time is not on our side and begin to seek for extension of timelines. The time to act is now. We wish to reassure the security agencies that we will continue to work cooperatively with you to ensure the success of all forthcoming elections and electoral activities.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioners RECs he said have been mandated to provide a regular update on the security situation in their States to assist the work of the security.
Aside from the 2023 general election, the INEC boss said Commission need the support of the security agencies to conduct credible poll in the series of off-cycle elections including:
“The Governorship elections in Ekiti State on 18th June 2022 and in Osun State on 16th July 2022. Furthermore, we have pending bye-elections in 18 constituencies across the country involving three Senatorial Districts, one Federal Constituency (i.e. House of Representatives seat) and 14 State Constituencies (i.e. House of Assembly seats). In addition, as political parties end their primaries on 3rd June 2022 and candidates emerge, campaign in public by political parties will commence nationwide as provided by the Timetable for the election in line with the provision of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)”.

Tinubu Reading January Newspaper In October, This Photo Is A Disappointment – Omokri
Nigerian socio-political activist, Reno Omokri, has taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter, to mock the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congres (APC), Bola Tinubu, over a viral photo showing him reading a January 2022 newspaper in October 2022.
Recall that Tinubu had posted a photo of himself earlier on the bird app reading a newspaper.
Tinubu’s photo which is perceived to be an attempt by the presidential hopeful to dispel rumours about his health status has since generated a barrage of reactions on social media.
Joining the host of others in making a mockery of the presidential candidate, Omokri on Thursday afternoon wrote: “This story was published on January 23, 2022. First an old video of your riding an exercise bike. Now, an old photo of your reading ab outdated newspaper? Bola, you should definitely fire the propagandist handling your Twitter account.”

2023: No State Or Community Will Be Left Behind If I’m Elected President, Peter Obi Assures Nigerians
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has promised that no state or community will be left behind in moving Nigeria forward.
He noted that if elected, his administration will tweak the security architecture, which will entail reform of security and governance. “We will restructure, re-equip and reorient the Nigerian Police: This will include 3 levels of policing- federal, state, and community,” he said.
Peter Obi disclosed this in his speech at Harvard University.

Obi said he will ensure that in moving Nigeria forward, no state or community will be left behind. Pursuant to its statutory responsibility to protect, our government will promote equity in power and resource sharing.
“The federating units will enjoy discernible autonomy. Resources will also be shared equitably. A higher derivation paid to oil or solid minerals-producing states will not be tantamount to other states not receiving federal allocations that should keep them viable.
“We will tweak the security architecture, which will entail reform of the security sector and governance. We will restructure, re-equip and reorient the Nigerian Police: This will include 3 levels of policing- federal, state, and community.
“We will build a compact, robust and ready mobile police force with rapid response deployment capabilities; and legislate the establishment of state police based on community policing. We will raise the population-to-police officer ratio to a higher level” he added.
On Nigeria’s role in Africa and insecurity, he added that we must think seriously about a leadership that is imbued with competence, capacity, credibility, and commitment. Accordingly, we will pursue intangible assets of good governance, rule of law, and the security of lives and properties.
He added his administration will ensure that they have these assets in place and stress asset optimization.
“We will strike a strategic balance that allows us to promote and protect national interest while meeting our ECOWAS obligations.
“We will rebuild Nigeria’s military power, promote economic growth, and enhance its technological prowess with a view to improving Nigeria’s diplomatic influence in sub-regional, regional and global affairs.
He added that restoring leadership will require that we reassert proactively, Nigeria’s leadership role in African affairs through constructive engagement, peacekeeping duties, and using existing sub-regional and regional forums as well as bilateral platforms for dialogue on current and emerging challenges. We will continue to enhance our sphere of influence via peacekeeping, and trade and investment initiatives.
