Barca May Be Willing To Let Aubameyang Leave, Says Xavi

Published

on

Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez, has decided to keep striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the club amid interest from Chelsea.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi has made it clear to Aubameyang that he wants him to be part of his Barcelona squad for the upcoming 2022/23 LaLiga season, despite reports linking the former Arsenal captain to Chelsea.

Chelsea has held talks with Aubameyang’s entourage about the prospect of bringing him to Stamford Bridge before the end of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, is keen to sign a new forward following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter Milan in June as the Blues head into the new season with Michy Batshuayi, Timo Werner and Armando Broja as their three recognised strikers.

Barcelona, meanwhile, is open to selling some of their high earners as they are keen to trim their wage bill to improve their financial situation.

The report added that Barcelona has not received contact from Chelsea about the possibility of signing Aubameyang.

But when asked about Chelsea’s approach for Aubameyang, who scored 79 goals during his time at Borussia Dortmund, Tuchel said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Everton on Saturday evening: “I would be interested in the 79 goals actually. We will not comment further.

“There are a lot of names out there. Sometimes it’s due to the fact that we discuss a lot of names and sometimes it’s pure speculation and we will not get involved.”

Interestingly, It was during Tuchel’s regime at Dortmund that Aubameyang scored 79 goals for the German club.

Rashford Capable Of Scoring Goals For Man United, Says Saha

Published

on

Manchester United legend Louis Saha says Marcus Rashford will be ‘unstoppable’ for Manchester United as soon as he rediscovers his form.

The former striker also defended midfield pair Scott McTominay and Fred after the lacklustre performance against Brighton on Sunday.

Rashford flattered to deceive in United’s frustrating 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday, missing two big chances after half-time.

But former France international Saha is confident it is ‘only a matter of time before the England international returns to form, however, and says the 24-year-old ‘has too much talent’ to experience an indefinite lull.

“The longer it takes him to get out of this bad form, then the more you start to worry,” Saha told Metro.co.uk. “But he has too much talent and he’s a great kid.

“You can see that he loves the club, he’s very committed to the club, and he doesn’t talk to the press in any nonsense way.

“It’s only a matter of time before he’s back to his best and scoring goals for fun. When he clicks again, then I think he will be unstoppable.”

Real Madrid Beat Frankfurt 2-0, Clinch UEFA Super Cup

Published

on

Goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and a fifth UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

While Frankfurt were dangerous, particularly in the first half, Madrid’s experience and individual quality saw them through, as it did so often in their victorious 2021-22 Champions League campaign.

Frankfurt had the best of the early stages, with Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois forced into a stunning anticipation save when one-on-one with Daichi Kamada in the 14th minute.

Madrid almost got their first, when Benzema released Vinicius to curl past Kevin Trapp in the penalty box, only for Tuta to clear the ball off the line.

With Madrid dominating possession, Frankfurt mounted several counter-attacks until Madrid launched a counter of their own in the 37th minute.

A diving Trapp got his fingertips to a goal-bound shot by Vinicius, pushing the ball out for a corner.

From the ensuing play, Benzema linked with Casemiro just next to the right post.

The Brazilian sucked in several Frankfurt defenders and a diving Trapp, before heading back to an unmarked Alaba who scored from close range.

After the goal, Madrid stepped it up a gear and should have gone 2-0 up, with Benzema uncharacteristically dragging the ball wide with the goal begging in the 41st minute.

Madrid’s quality became more obvious in the second half, with Trapp saving a deflected Vinicius shot in the 54th minute and Casemiro hitting the crossbar with 61 minutes gone.

Borussia Dortmund loanee Ansgar Knauff had a chance saved just minutes later before Vinicius and Benzema combined to put Madrid 2-0 up.

Vinicius skated down the left before slicing the ball back seemingly unsighted for the Frenchman to hammer home from the edge of the box.

Frankfurt fought hard in the closing stages but Madrid were able to dominate the game to win their fifth Super Cup from eight attempts.

The clash, in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium, was the first time these two sides had met in a European decider since 1960 when Madrid dismantled Frankfurt 7-3 through four goals to Ferenc Puskas and three to Alfredo di Stefano in the European Cup final.

The match also highlighted the growing gap between the Champions League and Europa League competitions, with Madrid being the ninth Champions League team to win the competition in the past 10 years.

Only city rivals Atletico Madrid have won the Super Cup when qualifying via a Europa League win in the past decade, having done so by beating Real in the 2018 edition.

In the 10 years before, Champions League and Europa League participants won five Super Cups each.

Frankfurt joined Hamburg (1977 and 1983), Dortmund (1997), and Bremen (1992) as losing Super Cup finalists from Germany, with only Bayern Munich (2013 and 2020) having won the showpiece event.

Guti Advises Ronaldo To Join Atletico Madrid

Published

on

Real Madrid legend, Guti, has backed Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo to join Atletico Madrid this summer.

Guti said Ronaldo would be a good fit for Diego Simeone’s side, adding that Atletico Madrid is a great team.

Ronaldo is keen to leave Man United after they failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

The Portugal captain has been linked with Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes is said to have already offered the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to Atletico Madrid.

But Guti believes this would be a great move for both parties as they will complement each other.

He told DAZN: “If in this case, he decides to come to Atletico Madrid, why not? It’s a great team, he is a great striker. Atletico Madrid needs a good striker and why not? I think it would be a good pairing.”

Guti added, “It would be strange, because Madrid loves him so much because he’s a very loved player. I think that the Real Madrid fans wouldn’t mind. I think that everything Cristiano had to give to Real Madrid, he already gave. If he feels happy being able to play in a great team like Atletico and in the Spanish league, which I think he wants, why not?”
