Buhari, Saraki Others Mourn Isa Funtua

Tribute has poured in for the late founding Managing Director of Democrat Newspaper and former President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, who died on Monday as a result of cardiac arrest.

President Muhammadu described the death of Funtua as a big loss to the Nigerian media industry.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity, Garba Shehu, he extended his condolence message to the family of the deceased.

“President Muhammadu Buhari received with deep sadness on Monday evening information on the passing of his longtime friend and associate, Malam Isma’ila Isa Funtua, who was Life Patron of International Press Institute and Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria.

“The President condoles with family members, government and people of Katsina State, and all associates of the former President of NPAN, especially the media industry, on the loss, describing him as ‘greatly admired and respected.

“President Buhari believes the demise of the publisher and businessman has created a huge gap as Malam Funtua consistently stood by him in his political journey.

“The President prayed to Allah for the repose of Malam Funtua’s soul, and to grant the family strength and fortitude to bear the loss.”

In the same vein, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki mourned the death of Funtua.

Saraki made this known via his official twitter handle, where he described Funtua’s death as a fatherly figure to him.

“Inalilahi Wa Ina ilaehi rajihun. The death of Alhaji Ismaila Isa Funtua is a personal loss to me and my family. He was like a father and one of the associates of my late father who chose to take me under his wings.

“He was always ready to offer his advice and give a fresh perspective to issues. I will miss him and the country will miss a detribalised Nigerian and symbol of national unity that he was.

“My condolences go to his family, his associates, the people and government of Katsina State and the entire country. May Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his sins and grant him a place in Aljannah Firdaus.”

Also, former Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general election, Atiku Abubakar also paid tribute to late Funtua.

He said: “Inna lillahi wa inna Ilaihi Rajiun! On behalf of my family, I convey my deepest condolences to the Funtua family over the loss of its patriarch, Ismaila lsa Funtua.

“May Allah forgive his sins and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. I pray for the needed comfort and strength for his family, friends and associates to bear the loss. Ameen.”

In addition, Yakubu Dogara, the former speaker on the other hand described Funtua as a patriot with too many legacies.

He stated this via his twitter handle on Monday.

“ Malam Ismaila Isa Funtua was a Distinguished elder statesman, media icon, construction magnate, industrialist and a patriot whose legacies are too numerous to list.

“My condolences to his family, friends, associates, the people and government of Katsina state. May his soul rest in peace.”
