…FG Plans To Give Protesters IPOB, IMN Treatment – Fani-Kayode Alleges
By Augustine Akhilomen
Apostle Johnson Suleman of the Omega Fire Ministries and the Catholic archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Martins have kicked against the decision of the Federal Government to deploy the army on the peaceful endSARS protests in Nigeria.
They warned that the move could worsen the whole situation considering the fact that Nigerian youths are only expressing their emotions to the government.
On Saturday, the Nigerian Army announced the commencement of its annual exercise, Operation Crocodile Smile amidst the ongoing nationwide protests by Nigerian youths.
Many believe that the military exercise, which will commence nationwide on October 20, 2020, is to counter the protest that has lasted over two weeks.
Reacting to the move, Apostle Suleman warned that any move against the peaceful protest by the youth will be disastrous.
The cleric tweeted, “Attempting to break the youths by unleashing the military will only open up new demands. That will be disastrous and regrettable.
“The reactions to years of oppression can’t stop in a week. @MBuhari, if Kolade Johnson, Jimoh ishaq, etc, were your children, will you be quiet?”
Also, Catholic Bishop stated that the deployment of security operatives to the protest grounds can only lead to injuries and possible deaths and an escalation.
“Such a measure, if adopted, can only lead to injuries and possible deaths, and an escalation of the protests. It has the tendency of turning the largely peaceful protests into a violent one.
“We therefore urge the federal government to toe the line of engagement in dialogue, listening to the demands of the youth and other well-meaning Nigerians.
“We commend the government for acceding to the demands of the youth. Now, the whole country looks forward to practical steps that would be taken to implement them.
“We believe that a sincere and transparent response to the demands of the young people would go a long way in resolving the present impasse.”
Meanwhile, Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and a social commentator, has warned against any plan by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai to crush End SARS protesters with military force.
He said such a move will lead to the end of Nigeria.
The protests for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, unit of the police have intensified despite government’s announcement of the disbandment of the operation.
Currently, captions such as, “end bad government in Nigeria; end bad governance; end police brutality; Justice for Jimoh Isaiq; restructure Nigeria; reform the Nigeria Police”, among others are trending on social media and also appearing on placards on the streets to indicate that the protest has gradually shifted from its original purpose.
The former Minister of Aviation warned that it would be disastrous to kill the protesting youth the same way members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, were killed.
In a tweet on Sunday morning, Fani-Kayode said, “The plan to deploy soldiers to slaughter #EndSARS protesters just as Shiite Muslims and IPOB youths were once butchered will be Burutai & Buhari’s gravest error.
“It will turn the #Endsars movement into the #EndNigeria movement. We warn again: Do not kill these innocent youths.”
