Direct Primaries: PDP Will Re-Strategise, Says Ortom

Published

on

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said that even though he never supported the issue of direct primaries, once it becomes law, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would embrace it and fine-tune its strategies to meet up with the challenges that come with it.

He made the statement while reacting to questions on the amendment of the electoral law, passed by the National Assembly.

The Governor, who was speaking with newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital, on Wednesday on the elections held in Anambra State at the weekend, insisted that direct primaries would come with more challenges.

While he observed that the adoption of direct primaries by political parties would cost more money, he stated that when the law finally comes in place, the PDP would re-strategise to meet up with the issues associated with it.

H said, “For the amended electoral law, some of us never supported direct primaries because it will create more problems than we ever envisaged and it is more expensive.

“Notwithstanding, if it becomes law, we will adjust to it and restrategies to ensure we (PDP) capture power. Even then, we will try as much as possible to bring people on board who have credibility, integrity and are people-oriented. People with grassroots support will win the 2023 election.

“Right here in Benue, you can see the calibre of people who recently decamped from APC (All Progressives Congress) to the PDP. Already, we have 70 percent control in Benue and more people have been added so it’s a clear sign that our people are ready. We (PDP) are prepared for the mantle of leadership in 2023,” he reiterated.

on

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) says a truck and the pump bay were destroyed in a New Year’s day inferno at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) was minor.

The oil giant said the fire was caused by a spark while the 33,000-litre truck was discharging naphtha into a tank at the refinery.

“The fire affected only the discharging truck and the pump bay.

“No other property was damaged,’’ NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Garba Muhammad, stated on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Muhammad said the fire was contained within two hours.

He added that the PHRC management mobilised the safety structure at the refinery immediately.

He stated also that support by the Federal Fire Service was helpful in bringing the fire under control speedily.

“Residents in the neighbourhood of the facility have no cause to worry as safety of life and of property is at the top of management’s priority list.

“The management and staff of PHRC also extend their profound appreciation to all those that contributed to bringing a speedy end to the fire,’’ Mr Muhammad added.
