Dowen College has shut down over controversy surrounding the alleged death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni.
Dowen, in a statement on Friday, said the school will be closed for two days over the current situation.
The statement read: “In view of the situation concerning the school and considering the emotions of our students we have advised that our students stay home tomorrow Friday 3rd and Monday 6th December 2021.
This will also afford the students opportunity to revise for their forthcoming examination starting next week
Oromoni’s death became public knowledge after a family member, identified as Perri, on Thursday posted about the incident on social media.
The family member identified as @PerrisOnoromoni alleged that the Junior Secondary School 2 pupil died from internal injuries he sustained during an assault by fellow students who wanted to initiate him into cultism.
He stated this before his cousin died after he called out five pupils who brutalised him for refusing to join a cult.
However, a statement by Dowen College Principal, Mrs. Adebisi Layiwola, denied any form of bullying or attack on the student.
Part of the statement read, “The whole incident is strange and unbelievable because the school had effective anti-bullying policies and consequences are well spelt out to all the students.”
According to them, the preliminary investigation proved that there was no fighting, bullying or any form of attack on the boy.
“He made no such reports, neither his sister who is also a student or any other students, prefects, house parents, medical staff, or any of the management staff.
“Furthermore, we state categorically Dowen College is built on core values of godliness and excellence and will not tolerate any acts of cultism, which is why there is nothing like that and there have never been such deviant activities as this is a faith-based school and effective policies are in place to prevent such occurrence,” the statement said.
The statement has since stirred outrage on social media as Nigerians have called for justice.

9 Years After, Ikeja Royal Families Settle For New Monarch To Fill Vacant Stool
Respite has finally come for the Ikeja Kingdom as a 9-year long feud over the traditional stool looks to have come to a conclusion with the emergence of a new monarch.
Refusal of three blood brothers from Ikeja kingdom Oshoja royal family, to allow any of them to emerge as the kingdom traditional ruler, after the death of the last monarch of the community, Oba Rafiu Amore of Amore royal family, has led to conclusions of other royal families, kingmakers, and chiefs that the brothers were not fit to become the kingdom’s traditional ruler since their disagreement had left the Ikeja community without a leader for nine years.
The battle for the throne, our reporter learnt, did not only lead the brothers, Wasiu, Nurudeeen, and Shamsondeen Adeleye, from Ikeja kingdom Oshoja royal family, into disagreement but also led to the death one of them, Shamsondeen, who was said to have died barely two years ago fighting for same the course.
Findings revealed that the two other brothers were not ready to renege on the battle even after the death of one of them and the contest for who becomes the traditional ruler of Ikeja kingdom may continue unabated for years if other royal families and stakeholders had looked away on the crisis.
Mediations, it was learnt, have not yielded results that could bring peace to the community, but instead, Wasiu and Nurudeen, would prefer that the palace remain empty for as long as none of them had access to the throne.
But for the kingmakers, the brothers’ resolve was not in the interest of other royal families as well as the entire community members that have continued to yearn for peace and emergence of another monarch that would put the palace into better use for the development of the entire Ikeja kingdom.
From other royal families, Iyade and Amore of Ikeja kingdom, their conclusions were that a new monarch should emerge and that the entire family cannot continue folding their arms while the traditional throne remains useless.
Members of the families expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation that has lasted the kingdom of nine years of the empty palace, saying that, there must be a solution to bring the crisis to an end.
They disclosed that since Nurudeen and Wasiu could not let go of their personal interests, the throne must go to another qualified member of the Oshoja and Iyade royal families that were also entire to fill the gap.
One of the members of royal families, who spoke to newsmen under anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, on Wednesday, said that Iyade has picked his candidate who also shares lineage with Oshoja and he is qualified to be a better traditional ruler for the kingdom.
He hinted that the candidate picked, one Tajudeen Muritala, was considered on merit and that the entire royal family members, as well as community, were solidly behind his choice as the next Ikeja kingdom traditional ruler.
The royal family member explained that the conclusion to pick a candidate from other royal families was initially reached five years ago, but that the decision was stepped down the three brothers pleaded to have resolved their differences and were ready to accept that one of them to ascend the throne.
According to him, the three brothers did the opposite of their pleads to other royal families and continued their infighting that had lasted another four years, increasing the years of interregnum.
“The fighting of these brothers have not brought any meaningful development to the entire Ikeja, but suffering and empty palace. Due to their actions, Ikeja has remained a kingdom without a traditional ruler because brothers are fighting themselves over who becomes the next ruler.
“We do not know how long this fight will last the brothers and other royal families must remove the kingdom from this mess’, he added.
Another member from Oshoja, indicate that Tajudeen had been picked by both his family and Iyade family due to his lineage to the two royal families and that this decision would not be reversed as witnessed five years ago.
She explained that the conclusions of both families were in the best interest of Ikeja kingdom and the entire community people who can no longer continue waiting and yearning for a new monarch to emerge.
To her, when two brothers cannot come together as one and pick among themselves who to rule Ikeja kingdom, the other royal families from the community need to step in, according to law.
“Six months is enough by law to allow family picks their candidate for Ikeja kingdom but since Nurudeen and Wasiu cannot do so for nine good years, their time is completely over and they need to step aside for a new candidate to take of our beautiful palace”.
She stated that the palace has been missing monarchs and officials who were supposed to be looking after the affairs of the entire kingdom and entire community but what had happened is contrary.
A strong member from Iyade royal family, Jamiu Folami, told our reporter that the families, after their resolve to end the long-overdue infighting, had sent Tajudeen Muritala’s name to Lagos State Government as the preferred candidate for Ikeja kingdom traditional throne.
Folami stated that the actions of the royal families would not be to only end years of brothers’ feud but also bring peace and development to ensure the Ikeja community after nine years of no traditional ruler.
He explained that the palace had its own quota when it was functioning until Wasiu and Nurudeen disagreement grounded activities of the place for years.
“Chiefs could no longer resume to their various office in the palace as a result of absence of monarch and other people benefitting directly from the place lost the benefits as a result of the brothers’ personal interests.
“Wasiu and his brother petitioned the Lagos Police Command over decisions of other royal families and I was there personally to defend every member today. During the engagement with the law enforcement officers, the police realised that it was families fighting over who has the right to the Ikeja kingdom throne and realized that the matter is before the Lagos state government.
“Muritala is well educated and has influence such that could bring fast development to Ikeja kingdom and in favour of our children and grandchildren”.

APC Crisis: Former PGF DG, Lukman Breaks Silence, Reveals Why He Resigned
The former Director-General of Progressive Governors’ Forum, Dr. Salihu Lukman has said that his decision to resign was as a result of the tyrannic posture of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said following the announcement that the national convention of the party will hold on February 26, party leaders must ensure the new leadership of the party that will emerge at the Convention will be tolerant to criticism and be democratic.
Lukman, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said since the news filtered out on Monday about his resignation, many party leaders, friends, family members and well-wishers have reached out to him with words of support and encouragement.
He said, “I can confirm that it is true I have given my resignation to Forum Chairman, His Excellency Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. I restrained myself from making any public statement on the matter because I am still awaiting acceptance.
“It is true that my decision to resign from the position is to enable me to continue with the campaign to return APC to its founding vision, which is to build a party that is not only democratic but oriented based on social democratic principles.”
The party chieftain revealed that the national leader of the party, Senator Bola Tinubu has urged him to continue his campaign to return APC to its founding vision.
He said following the news of his resignation, many party leaders and members called to express their worries, adding that one of the party leaders who honoured him with an invitation to meet him late on Tuesday was Tinubu.
He noted that Tinubu commended him for championing the campaigns to reform the party and expressed shock that some members of the Forum were intolerant to criticism.
Lukman said Tinubu argued that any party leader who would not accommodate critical opinion on fundamental issue such as respecting decisions and especially a matter as sensitive as organising the National Convention, which is the highest organ of the party, such a person is not a democrat and shouldn’t be associated with a party envisioned to be progressive, such as the APC.
“With these words, he encouraged me to continue with my campaign, which is what the party needs,” he said.
Lukman stressed that Tinubu declared his support to all decisions of President Buhari to ensure that the APC Convention is held in February 2022.
He added: “Since the buildup to the 2019 elections, internal contests in the APC began to degenerate, while some leaders became intolerant and conducted themselves almost as tyrants.”
Lukman pointed out that some party leaders in the bid to emerge as candidates of the party for offices became hostile, while the party campaign drifted to almost war situations in many instances.
He stressed that every campaign to get the leadership of the party to commence the process of internal reform was resisted.
Lukman added that organs of the party stopped meetings as required by the constitution, while views of party leaders became decisions of the party.
He, however, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari disagreed with what was going on in the party and supported the campaign for reform.
Lukman said without going into all the details, the inspiration to set up the current Caretaker Committee came from Buhari based on the expectation of ensuring that the drift in the party was arrested.
He stressed that this was expected to produce a new leadership, which should emerge at the party’s National Convention.
Lukman added, “Once the Caretaker Committee began to show signs of reluctance to organise the Convention, it should be a source of concern to all party members desirous of reform.”
