FIFA Set To ‘Compensate’ Injured S’Eagles Keeper, Uzoho, With €20,548

Super Eagles’ goal keeper, Francis Uzoho, is set to be the first Nigerian beneficiary of FIFA’s compensatory sum to players injured while on duty with their respective country during the official window.

The FC Anorthosis of Cyprus Loanee keeper in an attempt to save across in the international friendly match against Brazil landed awkwardly and thus raptured his anterior crucial ligament (ACL) and was subsequently replaced by Germany-based Fortuna Düsseldorf goakeeper, Maduka Okoye who thus made his debut for Nigeria.

The unfortunate incident would confine the towering goalkeeper to the bench for at least six months thus almost out for the rest of the season.

It was gathered yesterday that FIFA’s Club Protection Programme will compensate the former Elche of Spain keeper with the sum of €20,548 which is an amount set aside for players who get injured for their country as maximum daily compensation.

The fixed amount is meant for players who would be ruled out for minimum of 28 days and same applies to Brazilian super star, Neymar Jnr who limped out of the match after just 10 minutes and would be out of action for four weeks.

The money is a fixed salary that the club was to pay to the player for that period and the player must be sidelined for more than 28 days before a claim can be processed.

Uzoho will not be part of the Super Eagles’ opening qualifying matches for AFCON 2021 finals against Republic of Benin at the newly refurbished Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin and away to Lesotho next month.

Since the international retirement of Vincent Enyeama and the illness of his replacement, Carl Ikeme who also had to retire, Super Eagles have had to contend with goalkeeping headaches.

Ezenwa who stepped l in a World Cup qualifying match with Cameroon two years ago turned to be a mere flash.

While Daniel Akpeyi who was in action at AFCON 2019 tournament in Egypt last summer has not also fared better as a substitute to either Enyeama or Ikeme.

Unfortunately, Uzoho was warming himself back to regain the top man between the sticks suffered a major injury in a match he saved several goal opportunities by the Brazilian side.

Bayern Munich star, Jamal Musiala has singled out five Arsenal players for praise ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against the Gunners in April.

The Germany international is wary of the threat Arsenal pose and picked out Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz while insisting the Premier League North London club have ‘top quality’ players in every position.

Both Arsenal and Bayern Munich booked their places in the Champions League last-8 after beating Porto and Lazio, respectively.

“Martin Odegaard is a brilliant playmaker in midfield, but there’s a lot of quality throughout the team,” Musiala told Sport Bild.

“Saka, Martinelli, Rice, Havertz and many more. They have top quality in every position. We have to be ready for that.”

Kenneth Omeruo says the Super Eagles have shifted attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following their friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

The Super Eagles will continue their quest for a place at the mundial with two key fixtures against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Squirrels of Benin Republic in June.

Omeruo reckoned it is important for the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup after missing out the last time in Qatar 2022.

“June is only a few weeks away. We are focused on the matches against South Africa and Benin Republic,” Omeruo was quoted by thenff.com.

“Many players in the group have not played at the World Cup before and they see this as the big opportunity to be there. We cannot afford to let ourselves and the nation down.”

The Super Eagles are yet to record a win in the World Cup qualifying campaign having drawn their opening two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Arsenal Can Exposed Man City This Weekend, Says Sagna

Published

on

Former France defender, Bacary Sagna, has predicted this weekend’s Premier League top-of-the-table clash between Manchester City and Arsenal.

Sagna, who played for the two clubs during his career, is expecting it to end in a draw.

Arsenal currently sit top of the table ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

However, City can leapfrog the Gunners if they win at the Etihad on Sunday.

Before this campaign, Arsenal had lost 12 league matches in a row against City. But Mikel Arteta’s men ended their hoodoo against Pep Guardiola’s side with a 1-0 win at home in October.

When asked for his prediction, Sagna told Paddy Power: “I can see Manchester City and Arsenal drawing at the Etihad.

“At home, Man City can be exposed because they attack so much and leave themselves open to the counterattack and we know how fast Arsenal’s players are.

“It’s a strength to attack so much because they can put any team under pressure, but Arsenal can also put pressure on teams, so I think it will be a draw.”
