Football Must Do More To Combat Racism Than The Take Knee, Lukaku Insists

Published

on

Romelu Lukaku says football must take “stronger” action in the fight against racism, questioning the impact of players taking the knee before Premier League matches.

Lukaku’s Chelsea team-mate Marcos Alonso this week explained his decision to stop making the gesture, deciding instead to stand and point to the “No To Racism” badge on his shirt.

Last season, Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha stopped taking the knee, labelling it “degrading” and opting to stand instead.

Belgium international Lukaku understands those opinions, pointing to the continuing online abuse aimed at black players.

“I think we can take stronger positions, basically,” Lukaku told CNN Sport.

“Yeah, we are taking the knee but in the end everybody’s clapping but sometimes after the game, you see another insult.”

Lukaku wants high-profile players to sit down with social media bosses and other stakeholders to help tackle the issue of racism on their platforms.

“The captains of every team, and four or five players, like the big personalities of every team, should have a meeting with the CEOs of Instagram and governments and the FA (Football Association) and the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association), and we should just sit around the table and have a big meeting about it,” Lukaku said.

“I think all of us together, have a big meeting and talk about stuff that needs to be addressed to protect the players.

“If you want to stop something, you can really do it.”

Lukaku was speaking to CNN Sport around the launch of Chelsea’s “No To Hate” photography competition, which is encouraging fans of the club around the world to send in their photos that show the diversity within the Chelsea community.

“I think right now, from the owner to us, the players, we as a club, we are really putting out a statement and taking a position that stuff like that should not be tolerated,” Lukaku said.

Champions League: Arsenal Have Top Quality, Says Musiala

Bayern Munich star, Jamal Musiala has singled out five Arsenal players for praise ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against the Gunners in April.

The Germany international is wary of the threat Arsenal pose and picked out Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz while insisting the Premier League North London club have ‘top quality’ players in every position.

Both Arsenal and Bayern Munich booked their places in the Champions League last-8 after beating Porto and Lazio, respectively.

“Martin Odegaard is a brilliant playmaker in midfield, but there’s a lot of quality throughout the team,” Musiala told Sport Bild.

“Saka, Martinelli, Rice, Havertz and many more. They have top quality in every position. We have to be ready for that.”

Super Eagles Have Turned Attention To 2026 World Cup – Omeruo

Published

on

Kenneth Omeruo says the Super Eagles have shifted attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following their friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

The Super Eagles will continue their quest for a place at the mundial with two key fixtures against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Squirrels of Benin Republic in June.

Omeruo reckoned it is important for the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup after missing out the last time in Qatar 2022.

“June is only a few weeks away. We are focused on the matches against South Africa and Benin Republic,” Omeruo was quoted by thenff.com.

“Many players in the group have not played at the World Cup before and they see this as the big opportunity to be there. We cannot afford to let ourselves and the nation down.”

The Super Eagles are yet to record a win in the World Cup qualifying campaign having drawn their opening two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Arsenal Can Exposed Man City This Weekend, Says Sagna

Published

on

Former France defender, Bacary Sagna, has predicted this weekend’s Premier League top-of-the-table clash between Manchester City and Arsenal.

Sagna, who played for the two clubs during his career, is expecting it to end in a draw.

Arsenal currently sit top of the table ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

However, City can leapfrog the Gunners if they win at the Etihad on Sunday.

Before this campaign, Arsenal had lost 12 league matches in a row against City. But Mikel Arteta’s men ended their hoodoo against Pep Guardiola’s side with a 1-0 win at home in October.

When asked for his prediction, Sagna told Paddy Power: “I can see Manchester City and Arsenal drawing at the Etihad.

“At home, Man City can be exposed because they attack so much and leave themselves open to the counterattack and we know how fast Arsenal’s players are.

“It’s a strength to attack so much because they can put any team under pressure, but Arsenal can also put pressure on teams, so I think it will be a draw.”
