Founder Of South Korea’s Biggest Church, Cho Yong-gi Dies At 85

Published

on

South Korean Pastor David Yongi Cho, who used to have the largest church and congregation in the world has died at the age of 85.

Yongi Cho died on Tuesday.

With his mother-in-law Choi Ja-shil, he was a cofounder of the Yoido Full Gospel Church (Assemblies of God), the world’s largest congregation, with a claimed membership of 830,000 as of 2007.

Cho was born on February 14, 1936, in Ulju-gun, now part of Ulsan metropolitan city. The son of Cho Doo-chun and Kim Bok-sun, Cho was the eldest of five brothers and four sisters. He graduated from middle school with honours.

Because his father’s sock and glove business went bankrupt, he could not afford high school or university tuition.

Subsequently, he enrolled in an inexpensive technical high school to learn a trade. At the same time, he began frequenting an American army base near his school, and learned English from soldiers whom he befriended.

He mastered English quickly, and became an interpreter for the commander of the army base, and also for the principal of his school.

Raised initially as a Buddhist, Cho converted to Christianity at the age of 17, after a beautiful girl visited him telling him about Jesus Christ, before he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Sensing God calling him to the ministry, Cho began working as an interpreter for the American evangelist Ken Tize. In 1956, he received a scholarship to study theology at Full Gospel Bible College in Seoul. While there, he met Choi Ja-shil, who became his mother-in-law and a close ministerial associate. He graduated in March 1958.

Cho had spent more than 44 years emphasizing the importance of cell group ministry, which he believed was the key to church growth, as well as team ministry.

In November 1976, Cho founded Church Growth International, an organization dedicated to teaching the principles of evangelism and church growth to pastors all over the world. In January 1986, he led the way in establishing the Elim Welfare Town, a facility for the elderly, the young, the homeless, and the unemployed. The latter would be given training and a choice of four occupations.

In 1988, he founded newspaper company, Kukmin Ilbo. He was Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship from 1992 to 2000 and did not pursue another term, and has served as Chairman of the Korean Christian Leaders Association since November 1998. He had also served as Chairman of the Good People charity organization since February 1999.

In 2008, Cho retired, with Young Hoon Lee succeeding him as senior pastor.

…He’s a Complete Flirt, Angel Insists

Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye housemate, Saksay, has revealed that Emmanuel asked her for a kiss during the last Saturday Night Party.

Saskay revealed this while discussing with Cross and Angel on Thursday, day 54 of the show, after Emmanuel and Liquorose received rewards from Biggie.

Big Brother rewarded Liquorose and Emmanuel with 250 Abeg Naira and 200 BB tokens each, as Liquorose successfully carried out her secret task.

Liquorose and Emmanuel were also rewarded with an exclusive two-hour dinner date in the Executive lounge.

Discussing the wins, Angel noted that despite Liquorose’s prank, she still believed that Emmanuel is a flirt.

Earlier in her Diary Session, Angel has stated that she was happy that Liquorose and Emmanuel were having a ‘fight‘.

When it was revealed that the ‘fight’ was a prank, Angel still insisted that Emmanuel was not being genuine to Liquorose.

Corroborating her claims, Saskay stated that Emmanuel also asked her for a kiss during the Friday party.

Saskay said, “We were dancing and next thing, he (Emmanuel) was like, ‘can I kiss you?’ I told him, ‘If you want to chop slap, go ahead’.”

She also added that she feels that Emmanuel’s nature is to joke around and Angel agreed to it.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has disclosed why he joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Fani-Kayode explained that the APC he joined was different from the one he heavily criticized in the past.

The former minister had officially defected to the ruling party on Thursday.

His defection was disclosed at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by the acting National Chairman of APC.

However, the former minister explained that he joined a forward-thinking and accommodating party.

Speaking with Channels Television, Fani-Kayode, insisted that he joined APC to maintain national unity.

Asked if he joined for financial gain, he said: “I find that very insulting whether it is coming from you or my critics, I am not the first person that would decamp to the APC, have you asked others this same question?

“If you ask all politicians this question, you will get the same answer; nobody knows tomorrow. I have my values and I will continue to work towards that.”

You’re Yoruba’s Judas, Traitor, Gumi Blasts Fani-Kayode Over Defection To APC

Published

Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Gumi, has slammed former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode over his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Fani-Kayode, who had been a great critic of the Buhari-led administration, joined APC on Thursday after he was received by the President at the State House, Abuja.

Gumi, reacting, shared a throwback statement by Fani-Kayode in 2018 saying he would rather die than join the APC or bow to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Gumi said he had long neglected the rantings of Fani-Kayode, knowing fully well that he is a traitor and fake.

He described the former minister as a Yoruba Judas and a traitor.

His post on Facebook read, “I have for long neglected the rantings of the Judas of Oduduwa attacking me knowing fully well that he is fake and a traitor.

“Time has now caught up with him and thanks to Allah, all his vituperations are cast in the dustbin of merciless history.

“It’s him now one wonders which of the seven circles of hell this duper will settle if he doesn’t repent.”
