Ikoyi Building Collapse: Osinbajo Condoles With Affected Families, Distances Self From Property

Published

on

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo expressed sadness over the collapse of a high-rise building under construction on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State, on Nov. 1.

The vice president also condoled with families that lost loved ones and relatives in the ‘horrible tragedy’.

Osinbajo’s sympathies were conveyed in a statement by Laolu Akande Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Office of the Vice President on Friday in Abuja.

“The vice president condoles with the families and relatives of all those who have died, were injured, or were affected in the collapse and considers the painful loss of lives a horrible tragedy.’’

Akande debunked an online media claims that Osinbajo owned the land where the ill-fated property was sited.

“Also, the attention of the vice president has been drawn to an obviously sponsored falsehood regarding the recently collapsed building published by an online media outfit on Nov. 4 to the effect that:

“The vice president owns the land upon which the collapsed building in Ikoyi stood.

“That the said land was sold to him by Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, the Chairman of Elizade Motors;

“That the vice president, at some point, intervened with the regulatory authorities in Lagos State to unseal the said property.’’

Akande said it should be made absolutely clear that the vice president did not own and had never owned the said land.

He said that Osinbajo had also never been involved in any shape or form in the development of the said land or any other land since he became the vice president.

“At no time whatsoever did the vice president buy this or any other piece of land from Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, or entered into any transaction for the sale of that land or any other piece of land from Ade-Ojo or anyone for that matter.

“All property and assets owned by the vice president have been publicly declared.

“Also, the vice president has never spoken to the Governor of Lagos State or any other official of the state government regarding the unsealing of the said building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, which subsequently collapsed.

“He has, indeed, never acted to influence any other regulatory action on the collapsed building, or any other building for that matter, in Lagos State.

“The vice president restates categorically that he has no interest whatsoever, and has never had any interest, either legally or beneficially, in the land, the building, or development.’’

He said it was unfortunate, wicked and an act of dangerous desperation to spread such lies.

Akande said that appropriate legal actions would be taken.

“The wickedness and viciousness of a lie that seeks to utilise a tragedy where so many people have lost their lives, even as rescue efforts are ongoing, and in wanton disregard to the feelings and untold grief of their loved ones for political gain, reveals dangerous desperation, as well as the heartlessness of the perpetrators of such despicable lies.

“The online outfit is undoubtedly well rewarded for their criminal and inhumane conduct.

“Typical of a hatchet job and deliberately irresponsible journalism; the publication was not signed by anyone.

“The vice president has referred this disgraceful publication to his lawyers for prompt legal action,’’ he said.

APC Is Fractured Beyond Redemption, Says Obono-Obla

Published

on

Former special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on prosecution, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla has asserted that the ruling party in Cross River State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been fractured beyond redemption.

He also stated that the party had completely deviated from the ideals of the founding fathers.

In a public statement, Obono-Obla, who lost out during the Cross River central senatorial APC primaries yesterday, said that the powers that be were at a crossroads on what to do with him and had devised crude and inferior methods to edge him out.

The APC primary election for the Cross River Central Senatorial ticket for next year’s general election was won by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Eteng Williams, who polled 152 votes.

He was followed by former chairman of Nigeria Ports Authority, Akin Rickets with 109 votes, while Obono Obla got 19 votes and Mary Ekpere got 35 Votes.

“The APC has completely deviated from the philosophy of its founding fathers. Let us see how the anointed aspirants will deliver the Party in Cross River State. As it stands, the Party is fractured beyond redemption,” he said.

Recall that there were allegations of doctored delegate lists to favour the “anointed aspirant“.

Obono-Obla said, “Every politically informed person was aware that a particular aspirant was the favorite of the powers that be. The brandishing of the name of one particular aspirant as the favored one weeks before the election amounts to intimidation.

“The potentate makes sure that you must have his endorsement before you can aspire to become a candidate.

“Aspirants that did not have the endorsement of the potentate, had sorts of obstacles thrown along their paths. I was the target from day one.”

Published

on

It was not the best of starts for new head coach, Jose Peseiro, as the Super Eagles lost 2-1 to El Tri of Mexico in an international friendly game at the AT & T Stadium, Dallas, USA, in the early hours of Sunday.

The Super Eagles are now winless against Mexico in six meetings, losing three and drawing three.

Up next for Peseiro’s side is another friendly against Ecuador on June 2.

Mexico bossed the early exchanges as the Super Eagles struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Santiago Gimenez then gave Mexico a deserved lead on 12 minutes as his initial effort from a headed pass hit Uzoho and bounced off him into the net.

Andres Guardado almost doubled Mexico lead as he met a long pass but saw his effort parried away by Uzoho.

In the 31st minute Uzoho was called to action again but he made a brilliant save to stop a well struck shot by Guardado.

Before the start of the second half Innocent Bonke went off injured and was replaced by Katsina United’s Faisal Sani.

Mexico continued from where they stopped in the first half and almost doubled their lead early in the second half but Semi Ajayi cleared away a dangerous cross for a corner.

The Super Eagles drew level on 54 minutes through Dessers whose downward header off a delightful cross from Bassey was too strong for the keeper to hold.

Just two minutes later the Mexicans went 2-1 ahead after Troost-Ekong slammed a cross into his own net.

Terem Moffi should have equalised for the Eagles after receiving the ball inside the box but saw his shot miss the target.

Few minutes later Roberto Alvarado received a pass inside the box but could not keep his shot down.

With six minutes left the Mexico almost extended their lead through Diego Lainez but his low shot took a deflection off Troost-Ekong and went out for a corner.
