The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said it would begin the online voter registration, via its registration portal, on June 28.
The INEC National Commissioner, Mr Festus Okoye, announced this at a news briefing on the preparations for the Gwaram bye-election in Dutse.
“The INEC Voter Registration Portal will be deployed to enable people register online and thereafter go to their respective state or local government office of the commission to capture their biometrics and facials.
“Those that want to transfer their registration from one place to another can also make use of the online portal.
“Those that have prior issues of accreditation and with damaged or defaced PVC’s can also use the online portal to rectify the challenge,’’ the commissioner explained.
Okoye also said that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, would announce the time for the commencement of the physical registration at the end of the consultation with critical stakeholders.
He, therefore, appealed to all critical stakeholders to rave up their voter education initiatives.
He also called on civil society groups and the media to assist in educating Nigerians on the import of online voter registration.

ASUU/FG Meeting Ends With Task For Union
The Federal Government has said that the meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) meant at evaluating the implementation of the Memorandum of Action (MOA) entered into by the parties was successful.
Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the end of a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Monday.
Ngige explained that the meeting evaluated seven main issues with both parties expressing satisfaction with the completion stages, adding that “work is in progress”.
According to him, some of the items in the MOA were nearly done 100 percent within the timeline.
The minister said that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was instructed to expedite action on the integrity test on the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS).
He said, ”If successful, it will eliminate the challenges posed by the peculiarities of the university system to the current payment platform.”
Ngige said the government had also paid the N30 billion as the University Revitalisation Fund contained in the MOA since January 2021.
He said, “The report has been turned in, deliberated upon and both the Education Ministry and the NUC have promised to write to the Accountant General of the Federation next week for the release of the money to the NEEDS Special Account for onward disbursement to universities shortly.”
The minister added, “On the proliferation of State universities, a bill has been sent to the National Assembly by the NUC to strengthen its arms in terms of delisting universities where funding and other parameters are inadequate.
”ASUU is to go back to its members so that we can have a proper update on the extent of the inconsistencies in payment.
”We expressed our displeasure that these things are happening – amputation of salaries, not-too-clear, foggy things happening over peoples monthly emoluments. So we’ve asked IPPIS and ASUU to work together over this.”

FBI Probe: EFCC Denies Advising Mompha Amid Hushpuppi’s Trial
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has condemned comments by Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, on the trial of Ramon Abbas a.k.a. Hushpuppi by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Mompha had asserted that the commission advised him to maintain a low profile in the wake of the indictment of his friend, Hushpuppi in a $1.1million fraud.
He told Daddy Freeze in an interview that after deleting Instagram photos in the wake of Hushpuppi’s arrest, EFCC called him “to post my pictures back because it will be as if I am involved”.
Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC Head of Media, in a statement said Mompha did not mention the official who gave the counsel.
Uwujaren noted that his failure to ascribe the claim to anyone meant it was spurious and should be discountenanced.
EFCC insists it is not in the business of guiding suspected internet fraudsters and cannot advise one facing criminal charges in court.
The spokesman said Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited, are facing prosecution on a 22-count charge.
These include retention of proceeds of unlawful activities and negotiating foreign exchange without license, contrary to Section 5 and 29 of the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous (Provisions) Act, 2004.
Mompha is accused of engaging in forex transactions other than through the official market, contrary to provision of Section 11(1) (a) of the National Economic Intelligence Establishment Act to the tune of N32billion.
Noting that the EFCC called 10 witnesses and closed its case, Uwujaren recalled that the suspect filed a no-case submission which was overruled by the court.
Justice A. M. Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, is presiding over the case.

Igboho’s Asylum Request May Be Determined This Week -Lawyer
The request for asylum made by Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho may be considered by authorities of the Republic of Benin this week.
This was disclosed by one of the lawyers Olasupo Ojo, who said though there was no official statement from the government of Benin Republic on the asylum request, the decision would probably be made known within the week.
“No official position on the asylum request but we are expecting feedback this week.”
Igboho had sought asylum in the Republic of Benin in July, after his arrest on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.
His lawyers said application for his bail was delayed pending the outcome of the request and added that they were desperate to ensure that he remained outside the shores of Nigeria
Igboho had fled Nigeria to the Republic of Benin after his residence at Ibadan in Oyo State was attacked by officials of the State Security Service (SSS) in the early hours of Thursday, July 1, 2021.
Some people were killed at Igboho’s residence during the raid, and property worth millions of naira destroyed by the assailants.
Twelve of his aides were arrested on the same day and accused of stockpiling arms with intentions to cause chaos in the country.
