I’ve Accepted My Removal As AMCON Chairman In Good Faith, Says Banire

Published

on

The former Chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Dr. Muiz Banire, said on Thursday he had taken his exit from the Corporation in good faith.

Banire, who was a former Legal Adviser to the All Progressives Congress (APC), said he saw the AMCON job as one of public service, and not for personal enrichment.

President Muhammadu Buhari had during the week appointed a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Edward Lamatek Adamu, as Chairman of AMCON, replacing Banire who had been at the helm of the Corporation since October 2018.

Banire said in a statement posted by his political associate, Babafemi Ojudu, on his (Ojudu) facebook page that he was in London when he received notification of his removal.

He said: “Yesterday on my Twitter handle, I announced that my response on the disengagement from Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) shall be the subject of discussion in my column today.

“So, here we are! Tuesday, December 10, 2019, my tenure as the chairman of AMCON would seem to have expired upon the nomination of Mr. Edward Adamu as the new chairman of the bad loan vehicle. News about this development came to me while in London in the middle of a crash education programme.

“The negatively interesting aspect of it is the lamentations that trailed the announcement by some friends and associates who, in my view, had a disconnect between purpose of service and the relief that naturally accompanies the disengagement of an appointee with an alternative contact address.

“Barely 24 hours before the presidential nomination of a new chairman for AMCON over which I presided, Tunde Fowler, was replaced in his Chairmanship of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office by another appointee of Mr. President.

“Interestingly, I was disturbed with complaints and murmurs by some people who read lots of insinuations into the development and were apparently in a mourning mood, as if disengagement from a political appointment was tantamount to bereavement.

“My position on the Fowler issue was simply appreciation of his service and contributions to the nation. In my view, he cannot and must not have any regrets once he is convinced of having discharged his duty meritoriously.

“The grumbling from the supposed well-wishers underscores the problematic aspect of Nigerians as a people who see appointments into political offices as open sesame to riches and an opportunity for self-enrichment.

“Whereas, in saner climes, political offices are seen as opportunities to serve humanity, to the glory of God, in Nigeria, it is seen as an opportunity for self-enrichment. It is only in Nigeria that friends and “well-wishers” roll out the drums, make uniforms (aso ebi) and rent newspaper pages congratulating a new appointee or a newly elected public servant on his “rare achievement.”

“The purpose of this outlandish display of craziness is just to ingratiate themselves with the appointee for him to remember each and every one of them in his “father’s kingdom,” which they consider political appointments to represent.

“Representatives from his village, religious congregation, in-laws and several newly self-discovered relatives would bombard his doorstep in celebration of his new status and achievement. No one thinks of challenges the appointee is likely to meet in office or whether he would succeed in his responsibilities.

“From this unfortunate moment, demands would start piling up on his back; those whose children and wards have been sent away from school for failing to pay school fees would appoint him an emergency Rockefeller.”

Primary: Somolu APC Members Protest Alleged Imposition Of Candidate

Published

Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Somolu area of Lagos State, on Friday, faulted an alleged plot to impose a candidate for the Somolu Constituency 1 seat in the state House of Assembly.

The APC members, who made this allegation at the Somolu Local Government Secretariat, the venue of the primary election, further alleged that the leadership of the party planned to impose one Abiodun Orekoya on the Constituents.

They claimed that Orekoya, who is allegedly the governor’s cousin, presently serves as Commissioner 1 in the state Local Government Service Commission, and has refused to resign from the position despite wanting to contest for the Assembly seat.

Speaking with newsmen at the venue of the primary election, a youth leader in the local government, Oluwatobi Agbonton said: “We have been here since 8am and they have refused to allow us carry on with the election and we have heard that the governor and chairman of Somolu LGA, Dullar, have concluded plans to impose Orekoya.

“We are not going to allow any form of imposition from both Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dullar because in Somolu Constituency 1, we have our preferred candidate, who is Remi Ogbara and he is choice of every APC member in Somolu Constituency 1. They should allow a free and fair process and not impose the governor’s cousin on us.”

Also speaking on behalf of United Voices of Somolu, Mrs. Olaide Oke, called on the national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu to quickly wade into the matter and not allow the will of few individuals to prevail over the majority.

Mrs Oke said: “We are calling on our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to call Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and protégés in Somolu to order. Any attempt to subvert the popular will of the majority will be met with stiff resistance.

“The good people of Somolu Constituency 1 are demanding that a young and fresh blood be allowed to replace Honourable Olowo Rotimi who is currently serving in his fourth term in the House, and that young vibrant person is Aderemi Ogbara.

“Ogbara remains the young face of Somolu people to clinch the seat. That is why we have been here since morning to participate in the primaries but they want to impose another person on us but we won’t accept.

“We are not going to allow Dullar and the governor to have their way by standing against the wishes of the progressives and majority. That charade cannot continue, the United Voices of Somolu unequivocally and categorical demand the declaration of Aderemi Ogbara as our party flag bearer for Somolu Constituency 1 seat without any delay.

“Any attempt by Governor Sanwo-Olu to change the narrative by imposing his cousin, will spell doom for the APC in Somolu as a whole.”

2023 Elections: My Family And I Are Under Severe Threat, Says Senator Adeyemi

Published

on

The lawmaker representing Kogi West district, Senator Smart Adeyemi, has raised an alarm over the threat to his life and that of the immediate members of his family.

He raised the alarm in a statement on Friday saying, he was warned against contesting for the seat of the Kogi West senatorial district in the forthcoming election.

The lawmaker who stated that he has since informed the relevant agencies of the development, however, did not disclose the identities of those who issued the threat.

According to him, those to be held responsible should any harm comes to him or any of his family members have already been identified.

“The extent of the threat to my life is yet to be defined; but they are quite potent and palpable based on ‘their’ utterances, and I quote ‘if he dares to contest…, ‘I repeat if he dares to contest…” said Senator Adeyemi. “This has left me with no other option than to make a formal and urgent report to the relevant security agencies and top security officials within and outside the country.

“Any threat to life should not be taken lightly. Consequently, on this premise, Nigerians and the international communities are, by this statement, duly informed that the lives of my immediate family and I are under severe threat, and should any harm or eventuality come to any of us, we know those who are responsible for it, and this has been duly registered in the appropriate quarters.

“I am speaking the truth and nothing but the truth. It is my firm belief that every Nigerian has a right to run, and the voice of the people will prevail. No life should therefore be threatened in the line of duty.”

Senator Adeyemi returned to the Senate for a third term after a Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed an appeal filed by the then incumbent lawmaker challenging the nullification of his victory in the general elections.

In line with the order of the court, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted a fresh election on November 16, 2019.

INEC was, however, forced to conduct a supplementary poll after the rerun election failed to produce a winner as it was said to have been marred by violence and other electoral malpractices.
