Aisha Yesufu, an activist, has expressed shock over the role played by Kogi Stars Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo in stopping the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, from arresting his predecessor, Yahaya Bello.

The EFCC operatives had stormed Bello’s residence in Abuja in an attempt to arrest him over an ongoing fraud investigation.

But Bello was reportedly smuggled out of his residence by Ododo to evade arrest by the anti-graft agency.

“I cannot imagine I, Aisha Yesufu as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a Governor will come to Abuja where I am, to prevent @officialEFCC from arresting someone.

“As in, prevent it from carrying out its constitutional sanctioned duty. Nahhhhh!

Yahaya Bello: It’s Criminal Obstructing Our Operations, EFCC Warns

Published

on

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned Nigerians against obstructing its operatives during the course of their duties.

The warning came after security aides attached to embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello on Wednesday, obstructed operatives from arresting him at his Abuja home.

In a Wednesday statement signed by the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, the commission said, “The EFCC wishes to warn members of the public that it is a criminal offence to obstruct officers of the commission from carrying out their lawful duties,”

While quoting the provisions of the law, Oyewale noted that culprits are liable to a jail term of not less than five years.

He added that on several occasions, operatives of the EFCC have had to exercise restraint in the face of such provocation to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

He further noted that, regrettably, such disposition is being construed as a sign of weakness.

Oyewale noted, “Section 38(2)(a(b) of the EFCC Establishment Act makes it an offence to prevent officers of the commission from carrying out their lawful duties. Culprits risk a jail term of not less than five years.

“This warning becomes necessary against the background of the increasing tendency by persons and groups under investigation by the commission to take the laws into their hands by recruiting thugs to obstruct lawful operations of the EFCC.

“On several occasions, operatives of the commission have had to exercise utmost restraint in the face of such provocation to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

“Regrettably, such disposition is being construed as a sign of weakness.

“The commission, therefore, warns that it will henceforth not tolerate any attempt by any person or organisation to obstruct its operation as such will be met with appropriate punitive actions.”

The National Assembly has again postponed the resumption of plenary to April 30, to allow for the full renovation of both main chambers.

The Senate and House of Representatives had shifted resumption after its Easter and Eid recess to April 23, but on Thursday, it announced a rescheduling of its plenary resumption.

The notice of postponement of resumption by the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, also stated that lawmakers would also be reconvening back to the main chambers upon resumption.

Both Houses moved to temporary chambers in September 2022 after the commencement of renovation work on their Hallowed Chambers by Visible Construction Company Nigeria Limited in July 2022.

The notice read, “Distinguished Senators are hereby, respectfully informed that resumption of plenary, which was earlier postponed to Tuesday 23rd April 2024, has further been postponed to Tuesday 30th April 2024 at 11 am.

“Kindly note that the plenary sitting will be held at the main Chamber of the Senate. All inconveniences this postponement may cause Distinguished Senators are highly regretted, please.”

Similarly, in a statement by the chairman, the House Committee on Media, Akin Rotimi, said the House would reconvene on April 30, to allow for lawmakers to complete the constitution review process.

Rotimi quoting the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, said in an internal correspondence to Honourable Members on Wednesday, that the extension was aimed at giving Honourable Members more time for constituency outreach to secure adequate input in the constitution review process.

The statement read, “The extension follows the earlier decision by the House Committee on Constitution Review to extend the deadline for submission of memoranda to April 30, 2024.

“Additionally, the extended timeline will allow for more concerted preparation for the legislative summits on State Police, as well as the one on Tax Reforms, Revenue Enhancement, and Digital Transformation coming up in the next two weeks.”

“All inconveniences arising from this rescheduling are regretted. In line with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly, the House remains committed to being accountable and providing timely communications to all stakeholders,” it added.
