Officials in the US state of Florida have confirmed that the suspect in a shooting incident at a naval station in the town of Pensacola was a Saudi aviation student. Authorities say they are investigating whether the shooting was “terrorism-related.”
The Friday attack left four dead – including the assailant – and several others wounded. It was the second such incident at a US naval base in just two days. On Wednesday, a sailor whose submarine was docked at a naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii opened fire on three civilian staff members, killing two and later taking his own life.
The commander of the Florida base says the facility will remain closed until further notice. The military base employs over 20,000 people and is a major pillar of the regional economy.
