Turkish Women’s Cup: Nigeria’s Super Falcons Wins Tournament, Thrash Equatorial Guinea 9-0

Published

on

Barcelona forward, Asisat Oshoala, scored four goals as the Super Falcons thrashed Equatorial Guinea 9-0 to emerge champions of the Festival Women’s Cup 2021 Antalya on Tuesday.

The competition had the Falcons, Equatorial Guinea, Uzbekistan, and CSKA Moscow Ladies in attendance.

Falcons finished as champions with a maximum of nine points from three matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding none.

Glory Ogbonna opened the scoring for the nine-time African champions in the ninth minute, before captain Oshoala scored two goals from the spot in the 12th and 13th minutes, and then added a third in the 26th minute.

Uchenna Kalu made it 5-0 in the 36th minute, while Eibar forward Charity Adule scored the sixth goal with a fine header three minutes later.

The hardworking Toni Payne’s 43rd-minute thunderous strike after shielding off two of her opponents ensured that the Falcons took a seven-goal advantage into the half-time break.

Falcons coach Randy Waldrum brought on Gift Monday, Ramat Abdulkareem, Esther Sunday, and Maryam Ibrahim for Chiwendu Ihezuo, Chidinma Okeke, Payne, and Kalu respectively, ensuring all the 23 players for the tournament had a taste of the action.

The Nigerians, however, took their foot off the pedal in the second half, but still scored two goals to confine Equatorial Guinea, two-time African champions to a humiliating defeat.

Substitute Gift, who plays for Robo FC in the domestic league, scored the eighth goal in the 69th minute before Oshoala grabbed her fourth of the game in the 85th minute to cap an emphatic win for the African champions.

Two minutes later, Equatoguinean defender, Gina, was given the marching orders after a harsh tackle on the rampaging Ramat Abdulkareem on the left flank.

With the result, the Falcons become the first African team to win the tournament, following three straight wins.

Waldrum’s side defeated CSKA Moscow Ladies 1-0 in their opening game of the tournament before beating Uzbekistan by the same margin in their second encounter.

Oshoala attributed the performance to the hard work of the players.

“As a team, I’m really happy and also with the attitude the girls put up in the tournament because we came all out to make sure we had fun.

“Also, we worked very hard. We just want to make sure that we give our best and keep getting good results and goals as much as we can,” Oshoala told NFF Media.

Uzbekistan and CSKA Moscow will play the final game of the group later today to determine who finishes runners-up to the Falcons.

Uzbekistan and CSKA both have three points but the Uzbeks have a superior goal difference of +4.

Equatorial finished the competition without a point, after losing all three matches.

Chukwueze Better Than Pulisic -Fabrizio Tells Pioli

Published

on

Italian pundit Fabrizio Ponciroli has slammed AC Milan manager, Stefano Pioli, for the way he is handling of Nigeria international, Samuel Chukwueze.

Chukwueze moved to AC Milan from Villarreal last summer for a fee that could rise to 28 million.

He had a difficult start to his career in the Serie A but appears to have started to show his qualities since the middle of last month.

For this reason, fans of the club, who want to watch the player play every game are not happy seeing him wasting away on the bench.

The winger has started just four of the 14 matches played by the club since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations ended.

Pioli still prefers Christian Pulisic in the right wing role.

But Ponciroli wants Pioli to tweak his formation to accommodate Chukwueze in the starting lineup.

“I don’t know what Pioli sees in Musah, there’s Chukwueze in good condition and I don’t know why he never plays.

“I think Pioli has lost control of the situation. He was certainly convinced of these choices, it’s true that talking about them later is easier, but from before I already considered these choices to be wrong.”

Peseiro Breaks Silence On Super Eagles Return

Published

on

Jose Peseiro has insisted that nobody has contacted him about returning as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

The Portuguese coach stated this in an interview with Soccernet.

Peseiro left the role after his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, elapsed in February.

Subsequently, the NFF announced a vacancy for the role, with various candidates, including Emmanuel Amunike and Michael Nsien, being linked to the role.

Also, three European coaches, Danny Bujis, Domenec Torrent, and Toni Conceicao, made the final shortlist.

Amidst all of this, there were speculations that Peseiro could be asked to return to the team.

It was suggested that the 63-year-old is in discussions with the Ministry of Sports.

But Peseiro has denied the speculation, saying neither the Ministry nor the NFF has reached out to him.

According to him, he is currently enjoying his holiday and keeping up with matches, including upcoming games involving Real Madrid.

Man City Crush Brighton To Close Gap On Arsenal In Title Race

Published

on

Manchester City demolished Brighton 4-0 as Phil Foden’s double lifted the Premier League title chasers to within one point of leaders Arsenal on Thursday.

Pep Guardiola’s side were in imperious mood at the Amex Stadium from the moment Kevin De Bruyne headed them into an early lead.

England forward Foden struck twice before the interval to put the result beyond doubt.

Julian Alvarez ended his goal drought after half-time to ensure injured striker Erling Haaland wasn’t missed as his absence with a muscle problem stretched to a second successive game.

Liverpool’s surprise defeat at Everton on Wednesday was a welcome boost for City in the title race after Arsenal had thrashed Chelsea 5-0 on Tuesday.

And City’s stroll on the south coast kept the destiny of the title in their hands.

Guardiola’s team, who have a game in hand on both Arsenal and third-placed Liverpool, will be crowned champions for an unprecedented fourth successive season if they win their last five matches.

With at least four goals in each of their last four league games, City are rounding into form at just the right moment once again.

Next up for City, who are unbeaten in 18 league games, is a trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, while Arsenal head to Tottenham just hours earlier.

Guardiola has bemoaned the “unacceptable” fixture schedule that he believes puts his players’ health at risk, blaming the pile-up for their sluggish performance in Saturday’s 1-0 win against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals.

While City searched for the energy to propel them a step closer to the title, Brighton couldn’t have been any fresher as they played for the first time in 12 days.

But there was no sign of any weariness from the champions as they took the lead with a typically eye-catching move in the 17th minute.

Foden took possession 30 yards from goal and drifted towards the right flank, where his astute pass found Kyle Walker’s run.

Walker floated a pin-point cross into the area and De Bruyne timed his run perfectly as the Belgian’s diving header lifted the ball over Brighton keeper Jason Steele into the roof of the net.

De Bruyne’s fourth goal in his last five games marked the first time the midfielder had scored with his head in his Premier League career.

In a rare moment of concern for the City defence, Brighton nearly snatched an immediate equaliser, but Lewis Dunk’s header was too close to Ederson.

Stroking the ball around with contemptuous ease, Guardiola’s men were in complete command.

They doubled their lead in the 26th minute thanks to a stroke of luck when Foden won a dubious free-kick.

Foden didn’t waste the opportunity, unleashing a powerful shot that took a wicked deflection off Pascal Gross as it flashed past the wrong-footed Steele.

The England forward’s 23rd goal in all competitions this season was followed by his 24th eight minutes later.

City’s relentless pressing panicked Brighton’s Valentin Barco into surrendering possession to Bernardo Silva and Foden seized on the loose ball, driving a clinical finish into the far corner from 12 yards.

Alvarez had scored once in his previous 16 games and Haaland’s replacement ended that barren run with his first league goal since January in the 62nd minute.

Walker lost control of the ball after breaking into the area, but his lunging tackle stopped Steele collecting it and Alvarez pounced to slot home from close range
